Year 6

Welcome to Year 6!

Mrs Hunter is the class teacher and Mrs Armstrong is the teaching assistant.  On Thursdays, Miss Good teaches the children - Maths and Literacy, followed by RE and Art in the afternoons.  On this page, you will find information about Class Six news, pictures of things we've done and more.

Our class country is Mexico, which we spent some time finding out about on our very first entry day - 9th September.

During the Spring term, our class book is going to be The Other Side of Truth by Beverley Naidoo.

Please come and see us if you would like to talk about your child and his / her school life and learning.  We pick up on a lot, but not always everything and we are here to ensure they are ready to learn and if we can support your child in any way with that, then please talk to us!  Catch us at the beginning of the day if it's super-important, otherwise, please come and find me after school for a chat. Thank you!

Talk For Writing

As a Talk 4 Writing school, we place emphasis on children learning to orally retell different types of texts using story maps and actions. Throughout the year, children will learn approximately 9-12 model texts. We ask all parents to support children with learning these texts at home orally, so that children can use them to create their own versions.

The table below highlights the text types and texts that we are learning in Year 6. The table will be updated and added to throughout the year. Please download the texts and story maps and practise retelling them.  Aim to retell the texts with actions and expression!

The government have published a list of words that they expect years 5 & 6 to be able to spell.  You will find it helpful for revising in the lead-up to SATs.

Maths No Problem

As a school, we place emphasis on teaching Maths using a Maths Mastery approach. We place emphasis on children learning to develop their fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills. We use Maths No Problem Maths Textbooks and Workbooks in school. To find out more, visit to watch parent videos all about how we teach Maths at St Luke's.

The table below highlights the textbook and chapters that we are learning in Year 6. The table will be updated and added to throughout the year. If you wish to purchase a copy of the Maths No Problem Textbook A and B and Workbook A and B for your year group for use at home and also find out more about how Maths is taught in school, these are available to order at

We ask all parents to support children with learning their times tables at home; this is key to children being successful as Mathematicians.

Please also remember to make use of  IXL and My Maths to further support Maths at home.

N.B.  This table is under construction and will be updated shortly.

Maybe a bit early to be talking about SATs, but here's link for those of you who want to start early - I'd definitely encourage a bit of practice on this site...

Mr Ruffle and I ran a SATs meeting mid January which hopefully gave you a flavour of what is expected of them across all the subjects and gave you an opportunity to ask questions.

Here is the PowerPoint of the presentation that I did, which may be helpful if you were unable to attend the meeting.
