Welcome to the Year 4 Class Blog

11th July 202

Hello to you all,

Here is the work we are doing in school this week. Group 1 completed this yesterday and group 2 will do this work on Monday and Tuesday. We had a busy two days! We hope that you are all well and look forward to seeing you soon.  Love from Miss Good x

4th July

Hello to all of our class who are unable to return to school. We miss you a lot but hope that you are safe and well.

Attached is the work for this week. Our Thursday/Friday group have already started this weeks plans, but our Monday/Tuesday group will be doing this work on 6th and 7th July. Have a go! On Thursday we trialled our first whole school assembly via Teams. Mrs Goplen led the assembly from her office and we all watched from our classroom. We were able to come up to the camera to answer questions. It went well and something we hope to continue.  Next week we will be completing an activity set by Mr McLean, who will be your teacher in Year 5. I will email the video to you so you can also do this at home. If you can send Mr McLean your work, via email he would be very pleased to receive it.

Take care

29th June 2020

It was lovely to see half the class return to school on Thursday and Friday last week. I am looking forward to seeing more children on Monday and Tuesday. For those of you who are unable to return, we miss you and are thinking of you. We hope that you are safe and well. I will put up the work we are doing in class, so you can complete at home, if you would like to. Keep in touch. Love from Miss Good x

20th June 2020

Hello Class 4,

It was lovely to see you on Wednesday at our Teams Catch Up. I loved the jokes too!

This week I am very excited as will be able to see half the class return to school on Thursday and Friday.  The second half of the class will return on Monday and Tuesday of the following week.  The classroom is ready, with desks set apart, so things do look a bit different.......but it won't take long to get used to that. It will just be so lovely to see you and hear all about the things you have been up to. Until then, here are this weeks activities for you to have a go at.

Take care. Love from Miss Good x

13th June 2020

Hello Year 4,

It was lovely to see so many of you on our Teams meeting on Wednesday. I'm sorry you can not see more of your friends on the screen. I look forward to seeing you again on Wednesday.

If things go to plan, we look forward to welcoming you back to school very soon. It will be great to see you back in our very empty and lonely classroom :-)

Until then, here are some activities for you to have a go at this week.

Best wishes

Miss Good x

6th June 2020

Dear Year 4,

It feels so strange to be back at school and to see the Yr 4 classroom empty. I am missing my Class 4! However, it was good to see a few more Yr 4 children in school in the Key worker group. I am very proud of Year 4 for their amazing contribution to the Rockstars, Tables Tournament. Do keep going with that...we have until Friday and are in the lead so far. It would be awful for South Baddesley to overtake us in the last few days!

Here are this week's suggested activities. Keep sending the photos and emails through. I love to hear from you and see what you are up to.

Take care

Monday June 1st.

Hello Year 4,

I hope you have had a really enjoyable half term. What amazing weather we had! Maybe this last week you have been able to see friends and relatives you have not seen in a long time.

We have ventured out a bit more this last week, whilst choosing carefully places we thought would not be too busy as it is so important to maintain the 2 metre social distancing. Whilst walking in Setthorns Enclosure I did hear voices that I recognised and was delighted to see Will and Dexter with their Mums. It was so lovely to have a quick catch up (2 metres apart of course!)

This week I am back at work so will be seeing a few more of our class who are in school if their parents are key workers.

For those of you still at home, keep up the amazing effort you have been putting in to your work. I think you are brilliant.....and am very proud of you all.

Here is the suggested work for this week.

23rd May 2020

Hello Class 4,

I hope that you are all well. This week is Half Term! Some of you might still want to complete some school activities so I've attached them below. There are some fun things to do. Choose which you want to try or do them all if you would like!   If you want to take a week off that is fine!

We have had a busy week at home. Along with completing school work we have played a lot with our guinea pigs who are getting used to us now. We have been out a bit too. We chose places that were relatively quiet, including the beach one evening, which was lovely. You will be pleased to hear, the fence is nearly finished! :-) I will be in touh next week about setting up a TEAMS meeting with you all and can not wait to see all your faces :-)

Firstly a massive congratulations to all 21 of you who took part in the tables tournament against Yr 6.  Yet again, you won in style! A fantastic effort. A special well done has to go to Verity who completed over 10,000 questions, Izzy who completed nearly 6,000, Lewis who completed over 4,000 and Orlando who completed over 3,000.

Thank you for the photos you have sent me this week. I have loved seeing your minibeast models; so many creative ideas and such a variety of media used! They are great! Some of you completed your stories too and they were really good. I could tell you had worked hard to build suspense and they was some fantastic vocabulary used too.

I hope you enjoy the tasks I have set for this week. There are some great videos to watch about animal classification and everyday life as a viking.

I hope that you are all safe and well and that you have had a good week. Did any of you join in the VE day celebrations on Friday?

Thinking of you all and missing you a lot.

Home Learning 27/4/20 (Please note 28/4 I have changed to IXL unit to practise on )

Hello Class 4,

Thank you for all your great work this week and the emails you have sent. I  hope you have enjoyed starting to learn about The Vikings. I have been most impressed with all your amazing drawings of minibeasts too!

I hope that you are all well. We have been busy here at home as have been painting our garden fence! It is very long and is taking forever! My children have been helping me but tend to end up with more paint on themselves than on the fence. We have been reading The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch. Do you remember that story from Yr 1? Now they are writing their own version of the story and also writing facts about lighthouses. We have been learning to double numbers in maths.

We have also been enjoying our daily walk to the beach. I hope you have been able to enjoy the lovely weather we are having, despite the fact that we can not go out for too long.

Please find below this weeks tasks. Please note Mr McLean has challenged Class 4 to a tables competition on Tables Rockstars! (See Maths section of plan) I will let you know next week if we managed to beat Class 5!! COME ON CLASS 4 (I just shouted that out loud for you!)

Take care and stay safe.

Hello Class 4,

I hope that you had a good Easter and that you are all safe and well.

Please find below suggested activities for the coming week and attached documents. We would now be starting our Summer term at school and I really hope that we will return to school before the end of the academic year, if it is safe to do so.

Until then, keep working hard and please do continue to send me photos of anything you are particularly proud of. I have enjoyed receiving your emails and hearing about all the things you have been doing, whilst in lockdown. What a wonderfully creative group of children you are. I miss you all.

Take care, stay safe and well.

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all well. All is good here! I have been busy learning how to use new technology so I can meet 'virtually' with staff at school. If I can get it to work, I will attempt to post a short video on here soon, to say hello.

My children and I have been trying to make the most of the good weather too and have done a bit of gardening together. We have also been getting into a routine of school work in the morning, then more relaxed activities in the afternoon. We have made bread and written letters to relatives, which we post on our daily walk.  What have you all been up to?   I will be uploading next week's home learning onto the class blog soon. In the meantime, if you need to contact me or have any photos of the work you have done, please email me at    j.good@st-lukes.hants.sch.uk    I'd especially like to see any Kandinsky style art work you may have completed.  I will try to share some of your photos on this blog. (Scroll down for photos.)

I miss you all very much. Stay safe and well and look after each other in your families.

Love and best wishes

Hello Year 4 children and parents,

What an extraordinary time we are all experiencing and something we could never have predicted a few months ago.  It is going to be very strange not to see you all at school each day; I'm going to miss you.

Along with the generic list of ideas shared in the letter from Mrs Goplen,  https://www.st-lukes.hants.sch.uk/letters-to-parents/  please find below specific activities for you to use at home during the time you are at home.

If you did not collect your pack of books, please call the school to arrange collection.

My advice to you is to plan a homeschool timetable and establish a daily routine. Even if your schedule is very loose , organising things will give a framework to your day. However, you do need to make a plan that suits you. A great homeschooling schedule is only great if it works for you! You may decide to have a set timetable, or you may decide to have a list of activities each day that you can tick off when complete. As always, parents please be mindful and supervise children online in addition to being mindful of children taking part in a balance of traditional activity and online activity during the day. If nothing else, let's use this as a time to develop our independence and take responsibility for our own learning.

Here is my suggestion for your use if you choose:

09:00-10:30 Literacy, spellings and handwriting.

10:30-11:00 Take a break and do something you like to do to relax.

11:00-12:00 Maths

12:00-13:00 Lunch and time to relax. Get some fresh air and exercise if you can.

13:00-14:30 Afternoon activities. Work on your personal project or complete the creative task I set. you may choose this time to learn a new skill; cooking or gardening for example.

14:30  Relax and read!

I will set out activities for you to complete at home each week and will update this weekly.

Parents, please continue to support your children as they complete activities, as you always do; check work and support with suggestions of how they might improve, if you can.

As we adjust to this new way of working, the weekly home-learning plan will evolve. Please bear with me.

Sending my very best wishes to you all.

Miss Good

Talk For Writing

As a Talk 4 Writing school, we place emphasis on children learning to orally retell different types of texts using story maps and actions. Throughout the year, children will learn approximately 9-12 model texts. We ask all parents to support children with learning these texts at home orally, so that children can use them to create their own versions.

The table below highlights the text types and texts that we are learning in Year 4. The table will be updated and added to throughout the year. Please download the texts and story maps and practise retelling them.  Aim to retell the texts with actions and expression!

Maths No Problem

As a school, we place emphasis on teaching Maths using a Maths Mastery approach. We place emphasis on children learning to develop their fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills. We use Maths No Problem Maths Textbooks and Workbooks in school. To find out more, visit https://www.st-lukes.hants.sch.uk/click-here-for-parent-videos-for-singapore-maths/ to watch parent videos all about how we teach Maths at St Luke's.

The table below highlights the textbook and chapters that we are learning in Year 4. The table will be updated and added to throughout the year. If you wish to purchase a copy of the Maths No Problem Textbook A and B and Workbook A and B for your year group for use at home and also find out more about how Maths is taught in school, these are available to order at http://www.mathsnoproblem.co.uk/mathematics/primary-key-stage1-and-key-stage-2/maths-no-problem.html

We ask all parents to support children with learning their times tables at home; this is key to children being successful as Mathematicians. Please remember to make use of Times Table Rock Stars to support Maths at home.
